Why put so much pressure on January 1st?

Why put so much pressure on January 1st?

November 17, 20233 min read

You know exactly what I'm talking about - this tendency we all have (yes, me included 🙋🏻‍♀️) of waiting until January 1st rolls around to begin tackling all our health & wellness goals.

But the reality is that if you haven't actually been doing anything to achieve those goals or the new habits you plan to adopt in the new year, what makes you think that you're suddenly going to be able to tackle it all at once - just because we've flipped to a new year?

I hate to break it to you - but this is actually a pretty terrible strategy, for a couple of reasons!

#1 - You're putting SO MUCH PRESSURE on yourself. Usually, these new year's resolutions we decide on involve making a lot of changes all once, and that's not very sustainable. Sure, the excitement of your new goal might push you through the first few days, but in the long run that excitement will start to wear off and it will be harder to stick with. Maybe you have a particularly bad morning & you end up skipping your morning walk. There's a good chance this will snowball into you not sticking to the rest of your new habits as the day goes on. And then what happens tomorrow now that you've broken the routine?

#2 - Think about how you tend to feel come January 1st. I don't know about you, but coming out of the holiday season, I tend to feel like I'm in a sugar coma, I'm feeling super bloated, I'm peopled out and am craving REST with every fibre of my being. Yes, I'm usually also feeling ready to get back to routine, I'd much prefer to take a gentle approach than go from lounging around in my PJs and cuddling dogs to suddenly going for a morning walk, eating no sugar, getting a workout in every day, limiting my screen time, going to bed by 10 PM (don't lie, I KNOW you do this to yourself too).

Now ask yourself how different January 1st will feel if you started working on ONE habit today, and stayed consistent with it until the new year.

There are just over 6 weeks left of 2023 - that's 43 days.

What if you had 43 days of proof that you can stick to one habit going into the new year?

Imagine how much better January 1st will feel having built that trust with yourself & KNOWING that you can actually stick to your commitments to yourself.

And what if you chose ONE new habit to add in come January 1st to get you closer to your overall goal? And then when that one starts to feel easy and like a true habit, add in ONE more.

Wouldn't that be a much more sustainable approach?

Let me know in the comments what you’re going to focus on first! I would love to cheer you on along the way 💛
